7 out of 10 self-driving accidents are Tesla
About 400 traffic accidents related to the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) have occurred in the United States in the past 10 months, the report showed. Seven out of 10 related accident vehicles were counted as Tesla.
According to the New York Times (NYT) on the 15th, 392 car accidents related to autonomous driving, including ADAS, counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from July 1 last year to May 15 this year. By car manufacturer, Tesla accounted for 273 cases, the largest number, followed by Honda (90 cases), Subaru (10 cases), and Ford (5 cases). Most companies had less than five cases, and Hyundai Motor had one case.
“We promise that autonomous driving technology will improve safety, but we need to understand how it works in the real world,” said Stephen Cliff, director of NHTSA, who announced the results of the survey. “We will try to find potential defect trends.” However, he added, “The results of this investigation alone should not conclude the safety of each manufacturer’s autonomous driving system.”
It is explained that the specific accident rate cannot be determined due to the lack of detailed information on the number of cars by manufacturer equipped with the ADAS system and information on the driver’s system use.
Tesla, which had the largest number of accidents, has 830,000 vehicles equipped with autopilots or other ADASs in the United States. On the other hand, other manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors (GM), and BMW have far less sales of vehicles equipped with ADAS. 안전놀이터
The announcement was made for the first time in June last year when the U.S. government mandated car manufacturers to report accidents related to the Level 2 autonomous driving system. “This is the first time the federal government has collected data on related accidents directly,” said Matthew Wensley, a professor at Benjamin Cardozo Law School. “It’s different from the lukewarm response of NHTSA until last year.”
